Well, the arts have their place. I wouldn't dismiss them totally. I'm just.. not any good at them.
[OOC: I'm pretty lenient with people knowing Al's "secret", but I don't know any of Sorrow's canon. How would he be able to sense that Al has no body?]
[OOC: Ich. Al's manga-canon, so it's a little sticky... his body is alive, somewhere beyond the gate, it's just been separated from his soul. So he's not exactly a ghost, so much as like, half himself.
Don't worry about it. :D You know his canon better, so it's up to you if he'd be able to know what's what with Al. Maybe just a sense of wrongness, but not exactly how?]
Strange...he wears a suit of armor? It must be heavy. He doesn't quite seem alive in the standard sense, but he certainly isn't some kind of ghost...
Alchemist? Pardon me -- we don't have any kind of magic where I come from. Does this mean you can, for example, turn lead into gold?
[ooc: whoa, okay, it's more complex than I had thought! Sure, I'll go with your proposal. It sounds right for the weird situation. So ignore his first thought there.]
Then your science is far, far more advanced than that of my world! Your armor, though, looks archaic, something from the world of old. It seems quite well-made nonetheless.
Turning lead into gold would wreck the world's economy, but that seems like a crime that would be quite common if enough people knew this alchemy.
The penalties aren't worth it. And anyway, you can't get something from nothing. You'd need enormous quantities of the raw materials that make up gold to get enough to make it worth while.
Hmm. Why wear a standard suit of armor, then, in the summer and the midst of such technology?
Perhaps he's some kind of metal-creature? That may explain why he doesn't feel quite...right.
You must be quite the intellectual. It probably takes years to learn such a skill even without the brains to back it. What else can you do, aside from transmute materials like that?
Alchemy... it can be used for anything. Mostly fixing, repairs and building -- I'm good at those. It can also be used militarily, and in Xing they have a type of Alchemy that's medicinal. I'm studying that now.

A spirit? It doesn't have a human body...One might say you have a higher calling than mere words, eh?

A scientist...what is it, precisely, that you practice?
[ooc: He's a medium/necromancer in his world; he can tell who's living and dead -- isn't Al is just sort of a ghost sitting inside a body of armor?
Sorry if I was being presumptuous about this -- don't mean to!]

I'm an alchemist.

You can, but it's illegal. For pretty obvious reasons.
[OOC: The manga can't make anything easy for us. XD sounds good to me!]

It does take a very long time to learn. I've been studying since I could read.

......It's good, that what you decided to do so young is what you still love.
