Age: canon begins very specific and then gets kinda vague, but: Al is born in spring, 1900; he begins his journey October 3, 1911, and the story begins in mid-to-late 1914. It lasts just over a year to end in the spring of 1916. Al will be coming from after his time in Xing, making him 18.
Canon point: epilogue/post canon, when he's studying alkahestry in Xing.
Personality: (edited from a personality app for DDD)
To understand Al as an adult, it is important to understand Al's growth through the series. Most of Al's life revolved around his brother. He was pretty much Ed's perfect counterpart, polite where Ed was rude, thoughtful and prepared where Ed was brash and impetuous, and calm where Ed was.. Ed. The overall effect made Al seem kind of like a doormat, since he spent a lot of his time following Ed around, abiding by and apologizing for his decisions.
However, behind the quiet exterior, Al proved himself to be just as smart and skilled (if not more so) than his brother. He was very reserved and polite, but not a pushover. He spoke his mind if he believed someone was behaving poorly or unfairly. And,as he and Ed grew apart, he became more and more independent, especially in making his own decisions.
The greatest change over the course of their journey was to Al’s sense of justice. He used to worry a lot about "wrong" and "right" and while he knew there were shades of gray in between, he tried as hard as he could to paint over them. While he was a very reasoned, intellectual, mature individual, emotionally he was still a little boy who'd never had a fair chance to learn about the world. Their journey knocked that out of him fast.
Al’s pragmatism in the face of unimaginable horrors (including genocide, mass murder, and child-murder), along with his own mortality, forced Al to grow up much faster than his brother. While Ed maintained his idealism all the way until the end, Al compromised his dreams and his morals (examples include using a Philosopher’s Stone, accepting the death of their allies, and eventually, accepting his own death).
As a result, the Al who got his body back is a very different person than the one who set off to fix his brother. While he is still optimistic and cheerful, still fiercely protective of his loved ones (judging by the photographs, he frequently travels from Xing to visit) he is not idealistic. He has a calculated, almost cold side, that will allow him to weigh the risks and make the hard decisions. He no longer believes in the strictly just scientific law of Equivalent Exchange.
That doesn't mean that he is cruel, or that he will hurt or sacrifice others: he will always spare pain, or take it on himself to protect others. His new rule, as he explains it to Gracia, is "Equivalent exchange + 1" - for everything you receive, you add a little more of yourself and give it to the next person.
Al is also more independent now than he was portrayed in the series, thanks to the time he and his brother spent apart in the later part of their journey. While Edward appears content to retire to Risembool, Al is still adventuring. He is still bright and curious, and he wants to keep learning. Ed's needs no longer supersede his own, as evidenced by the fact that he is able to leave Ed and travel to Xing on his own journey.
Powers/Abilities: Let's start with strength and intelligence. Al studied with Izumi Curtis, a noted martial artist, alongside his brother, and is actually noted in the series as a better martial artist than Ed. Although his body is not as strong as it once was, he still has the benefit of those decades of martial arts practice. While he prefers not to fight, if he has to, he will kick heiney.
His intelligence is a little harder to gauge, but it is still made clear that Al is extremely smart. In the manga, Al never takes the state alchemy exam, but in the 2003 anime he does, and finishes it (Ed is unable to). In addition to sharing in Ed's accomplishments (he clearly understands and can debate the same alchemical theories as Ed, at a year younger) he read proficiently and understood advanced math at about 3. He spoke even earlier and was apparently potty trained at about 1 (He wakes Ed up to take him to the bathroom in a flashback.)
Finally, alchemy. Because Al has seen "the truth", he can transmute without a transmutation circle. He is limited by the laws of equivalent exchange, but within those laws he can take apart or build almost anything. He will also use a Philosopher’s Stone if there is one available and the need is great enough, freeing him from the alchemical laws entirely. He is also proficient in both Amestrian alchemy and Xingian alkahestry. (The first is largely rooted in the deconstruction and reconstruction of objects; the second on the flow of energy and the healing arts.)
