Greed considered himself more social than most, but with a relationship as ambiguous as the one he had with the Elrics, deciding how to go about handling problems that really had no value to him was difficult. He said to make it something not so hypothetical, but this was all one big thought exercise where the outcome couldn't possibly matter less to him.
Their lack of connection was made obvious by that last question.
