The worst part about it was that Edmund knew Al was trying to be kind. It felt like cruelty at the moment. But Al was determined to see his brand of kindness through, leaving Edmund to muddle as best he could. Alone.

If Kala were to bear him an heir...no, they wouldn't take kindly to a Panther as heir to the Narnian throne. It would never get that far. Kala and he would be long dead. "I will," he promised, only because he wouldn't trust the Lions as far as he could throw them, which was not at all.

Mid-hug, Lucy put him at arms' length to peer closely at Al. "Just awful," she concluded, truthfully and with a great deal of sympathy. "Have you seen Edmund then? Did you quarrel again?"
