Forgiven? Perhaps. Al had never been angry with Edmund, at least not in the way he imagined. Terrified. Lonely and heartbroken. Even now he didn’t know if Edmund understood everything Al had given up. Being so far from his family and pledging never to start a family of his own... self-exile, he called it, but it wasn’t that. It was for the good of Narnia. The rest was imposed upon him, and he couldn’t say no.
He hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take Edmund’s hand. He didn’t know if he could trust himself to let go once they were touching. But Edmund was so nervous.
“I didn’t expect any welcome,” he said softly. How could he explain that coming back was more home without any fanfare at all than his new pride? He didn’t want to make Edmund feel worse.
“I’m well. My pride has been very welcoming. I’m very grateful to them. How are you?” He forced the words around a tightness in his throat. He should probably let go of Edmund’s hand.
