Edmund blinked at him. Now that they were both human again, he found it much more awkward to openly express his own interest. How could he possibly explain that to Al? That his Panther form let him be his raw, realest self? How formative years in reserved England and a decade more being trained in royal etiquette had left him aching for the freedom of transformation and pack life. To Al, it was all just...life.
He looked pensive, quiet for several breaths in a tall, self-contained sort of way, dignified from those years of training. When he spoke, his voice was heavier than before, without the teasing edge to it.
"You brought light into my day, even for a moment. Joy and honesty together. It...drew me." He swallowed, aware that he was perhaps lowering himself to admit this next part to a lowly steward, but he didn't care. "I am sorry if my attentions were a burden on you. I am not used to being spurned. I did think..." Edmund trailed off, wondering if he'd misread the playful tug-of-war entirely, then shrugged. "No matter. I will not offer to talk again, if your answer is no." His pride couldn't take another hit like that.
