"I'm an alchemist, yes." One of the best. But Al was too modest to bring that up. He flashed Edmund a small, encouraging smile. This was better, Edmund was talking sense. Maybe he was cooling down?

(Soon Al was going to have to acknowledge that Edmund showed absolutely no symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke.)

"You need to know the molecular composition of an item, at least roughly. And then you can reshape it into whatever you want, by channeling tectonic energy through a matrix. That's how I fixed the cart. But alkahestry is different. It's like a type of alchemy, but for healing. I came to Xing to study it."

He glanced at Edmund hesitantly.

"I know I'm still learning. But if you'd let me examine you--" not like that, Edmund-- "maybe I'd get a better idea of how exactly you ended up here. I do promise it won't hurt."
