Good. Divert from those thoughts, Edmund! Clearly, you are very affected by everything that's happened and a tiny bit delusional. It's okay, it happens to everyone who gets lost in the desert for weeks and weeks. Al couldn't help noticing just how pale Edmund was, though. He didn't look sunburnt or parched at all!

First things first, he attended to their food. It should be up soon, with lots of water and a fresh pot of tea. Al was a little sick of tea but it was rude to refuse.

His eyebrows drew down at that rather befuddled explanation of alchemy. And alkahestry. What sort of education had this oy had?

"Not exactly." He sat across from Edmund, lowering himself down with great care. He knew he moved more like an eighty year old man than a boy his age, and seeing just how graceful Edmund was only made it more obvious. "Breaking things down, that's a part of alchemy. And turning lead into gold, or anything into gold, that's possible, but it's illegal. Alchemy isn't a silly trick like that, it's just transference of matter. Alchemy is the science that makes it happen faster, that's all."
